Q: But I thought the Government had "got Brexit done"? A: Only on paper. Leaving was the easy bit. The more difficult negotiations haven't started yet. And there's no serious chance of them being done by 2021. So it's likely there'll be major changes at the end of transition.

This is the strangest thing that ever happened to me, and in this dark and strange time, I thought Twitter might want to hear it. /1

Global biodiversity loss: “even quite a few ecologists seem to lack an appreciation of the sheer magnitude of damage we’ve done to the planet.”

Happy – 02/02/2020 is the same forwards/backwards and upside down (on a 7-segment display screen anyway). When will we next have such an aesthetically pleasing date?

I feel so ashamed of what we’ve become reading this account from a French person driven away by Brexit. Ashamed of what we’ve become. People who have given years, decades of their lives to this country driven out by a xenophobic ideology and what it’s unleashed.

The is looking to record historic tree graffiti found in our woodlands. When out for a stroll, why not help with our project by taking a photograph of any marks that you find and sharing them via

Today is a day of despair. There's no point denying that. But tomorrow is a new day. And what happens in it is up to us.

I study genocide. It's been a theme in my academic endeavours for nearly 30 years. More accurately, I study the conditions in the lead up to genocide, be they cultural, social, political, economic, etc... 1/n

I am not really doing Twitter at the moment, but I have to share the news that I just finished knitting a pair of geometric vase socks for the other Classicist in my life. This is probably my best ever academic work.

published a study last year claiming no racial bias in police shootings. The study's central claim was mathematically unsupported. & I submitted critique to PNAS, which was rejected. We appealed. Today PNAS published our critique.1/n

While struggling w insomnia last week, I started reflecting on Brexit Britain. I came across this: 'I imagine one of the reasons people cling to their hates so stubbornly is because they sense, once hate is gone, they will be forced to deal with pain.' James Baldwin
