People who need them ask for them. Everyone else can sip from the cup. That would save so much plastic. I don’t see the issue. I can’t imagine someplace is going to deny a person with a disability a straw??

If they flat out ban them, then yes, people will be denied them! Stores here in Australia are already banning the sale of plastic straws so people won't even be able to buy their own. And no, alternative materials are not always options.pic.twitter.com/AuYVeZ2MDr

Yes, and what's so frustrating that able bodied ppl don't get is that disabled ppl are so often not believed, made to feel bad, have to wait extra time, etc. Just for a very basic necessity.
-
I will make sure I keep that information front and centre in my own decision making. Thank you.

There are non-plastic alternatives.

There are metal reusable straws. They're great.

Agreed! I have a set :)

I have seen biodegradable straws in my travels, would help with both issues!
-
The problem is we(disabled people) would have to carry these around with us, and that might not seem like a big deal to you but if you have no arms, like me, trying to get out a straw from my bag is difficult, much easier to ask the server for 1.
-
Absolutely, perhaps all straws should be made from biodegradable materials regardless. Same accessibility of course, just different material.
-
Many materials do not make suitable alternatives. Straight out banning plastic ones would leave many with no other suitable option!pic.twitter.com/TmDAQ6jkq4

Sadly, they won't be ideal for everyone, but for those can use them, it's a start.

Does it have to be plastic straw? I have seen many places already which provide paper straws instead.

Thanks for the info!

@anetto@globeandmail My disabled daughter uses silicone straws. -
Felt an amazing amount of hostility from new acquaintance who suggested that if I need straws I would have to buy them from the US like contraband. It’s hard for me to lift heavy glasses of liquid. Will look for silicon.

They're a bit bendy and obviously expensive to buy at first, They go in the dishwasher. She likes them

Hers came from London
