Amazing. But isn’t it the case that we know neither the number of grains of sand (plus what counts as sand?) nor the number of stars in the universe? A lot of extrapolating, no?

Order of magnitude estimates are always to be taken with a pinch of sand, but they're not far off. Sands can have average sizes, cover a certain volume, etc. We can estimate the number of liters of water in a pool in a similar way, without physically counting each jug

it's cool to think that there are more sand grains in the Universe than there are stars, but if you break it down to number of atoms contained in either the stars win again

If you think of every person as a galaxy of cells...the number of cells in all the humans living on Earth today is about the same as the number of stars in the universe.

Some scales in science and nature are truly impressive. The shortest-duration laser pulse that has been demonstrated is about 50 attoseconds. The number of such pulses that fit in a single minute is 100 times more than there are minutes in the age of the universe!
