Because people seem interested here's some video of the COVIDSafe app failing on iPhone. It is literally impossible to broadcast the UUID needed for the app to work without the screen on and the app in the foreground.pic.twitter.com/X5lpyeKL1A

    COVIDSafe is broken on iPhone
I did some testing the other day with a Bluetooth scanner and yep on iPhone you need to have the screen on and the COVIDSafe app running in the foreground for it to work.

A bit of interest in this so just wanna say the upcoming Google + Apple "exposure notification" API currently in testing looks promising and will fix this issue, if they use it in COVIDSafe. Until then, stay safe and wash your hands friends 🖖https://techcrunch.com/2020/04/29/apple-and-google-release-first-seed-of-covid-19-exposure-notification-api-for-contact-tracing-app-developers/ …

My understanding is that it can still work in “listen” mode? So if you come across someone else broadcasting (e.g. an android) then you can still exchange ids. Not ideal but better than nothing.

This seems to still be a nope to me?? In foreground you can scan for all UUIDS. But in background mode you can only scan for UUIDs that you know by explicitly specifying them. So maybe it'll be gov policy to ditch iOS for Android soon haha https://developer.apple.com/documentation/corebluetooth/cbcentralmanager/1518986-scanforperipheralswithservices …pic.twitter.com/1ZPe8fbaRB

iPhone is one of the most popular smart phones in Aus. Seems to me if the government thought this app was really important they would ensure it functioned effectively on an iPhone before releasing it. #covidsafe @GregHuntMP @ScottMorrisonMP

Thanks for taking a closer look at the iOS version. We've started writing a series on this after finding the commentary from prominent technologists severely lacking. The second article should be out soon, which goes into some of these considerations...

Today DCMO said “the important thing is that if people have downloaded the app and they have it running in the background on their phone, it's already gathering details of people you've been in close contact with” which we see here is not true for iphones.
