A self-driving car without a “murder pedestrian” setting will never move in Manhattan. Cars work in NYC today because they pose a 💀 threat to pedestrians 🚶‍♀️ , so walkers avoid them. Smart Pedestrians will never yield to Self-driving cars at a Manhattan intersection.

Great point Phil, but rounded it out with clever solutions. We have been able to change people’s behaviour before.

I would very much like to see pedestrians put on truly equal footing.

If there are 100% self driving cars on the street, and if the computer logic is to not run over pedestrians in the street, then pedestrians can safely cross anywhere at anytime. Therefore, self driving cars in the city will never move, and are useless in the city.

Adam Millard-Ball wrote a great article about this AV v. Human Game of Chicken. Via @planetizen https://www.planetizen.com/node/89359/playing-chicken-autonomous-vehicles … Basically do you end up with aggressive cars, more jaywalking criminalization, fences between modes, or do we ban cars from dense urban spaces?

I once had a native New Yorker teach me how to walk across a Street with “just don’t look!” He’s still alive.

I've long thought this was the death sentence for self-driving cars in cities and thus to Uber's business model. I think both can only work in the suburbs and inter-city.

By the time this comes to fruition, there may be walking passages over/under streets, & GPS data with traffic 🚦timing will be better.. jaywalkers can be fined. Just a thought...
