If you run a Chesa recall campaign or stupid GoFundMe campaigns like this, you are just helping him win @SpeakerPelosi's seat when she retires.

Kim-Mai Cutler added,
Not sure. I don’t believe most San Franciscans wanted someone like him to win. I suspect even fewer SFers want him to be DA now. It would be interesting to interview people who put Chesa as their #2/#3 choice in that race to see if they regret ithttps://maksim-ioffe.medium.com/chesa-boudin-a-district-attorney-without-a-voter-mandate-4c609a724940 …
P.S. It's possible that @chesaboudin's legacy will be that voters will assume criminal justice reform cannot be done without undermining public safety. DA candidates running on better criminal justice reform platforms will be compared to him for years to come.
as a Canadian, with 1/4 the incarceration rate of California, watching people melt down because burglaries are up while violent crimes (mild uptick in homicides) are down is deeply confusing
Maksim Ioffe Retweeted SFPD Tenderloin
It’s true that many in prison are over-sentenced; that needs reform. But California has more crime than Canada (eg 3.5x homicide rate). In SF, melting down started in earnest after https://www.sfchronicle.com/crime/article/SF-driver-accused-of-killing-two-women-is-15840271.php …, “prolific offenders” aren’t getting punished: https://twitter.com/sfpdtenderloin/status/1340877753743118338 …. HTH
Maksim Ioffe added,
violent crime is down, including in the tenderloin, and homicides are not as up as the US average. property crimes are a factor of the pandemic (they’re also way up here). it just seems strange to me that people who say they’re for prison reform are against, well, prison reform
like, it’s not actually less safe in SF going by Compstat, and you’d have to free 75% of prisoners to get down to the incarceration rate i live with. incarceration is clearly not linked to crime rate, so why is this the DA’s fault?
1 complaint against @chesaboudin is releasing repeat offenders. Reasonable for proponents of CJ reform to insist on competence of those in charge. Btw, tourists (25 mln/yr in 875k city) were targets of many pre-covid crimes. Would be interesting to see crime trends against locals
just walking thru this on first principles; if they were repeat offenders it’s because they committed a crime during the earlier, more punitive approach. if that’s the case, then is it fair to say that prison isn’t acting as a deterrent? again, SF afaik is technically safer rn
Maksim Ioffe Retweeted SFPD Tenderloin
There’s all sorts of examples to draw on, including repeat offenders whose priors should be disregarded for reasons you alluded to. Also cases where it’s clear the system isn’t working (eg https://twitter.com/sfpdtenderloin/status/1340877753743118338 …) Details matter, and it’s fair to scrutinize every system failure
Maksim Ioffe added,
right to be clear the proposal here is that more people should go to jail because property crimes have gone up, right? that’s what’s at stake
I’d say that person who keeps stealing cars from above tweet needs to go to jail.
that’s fine just seems odd to oppose the whole project
