To be clear: I'm not saying "please help me find the answer". I'm saying: why do maths examiners find it necessary to concoct contrived questions to test rote learning of a "process" that has nothing to do with real understanding of maths?

I recall
@stevenstrogatz making this point eloquently, I believe in the New York Times.Prikaži ovu nit -
Or to put it another way: BODMAS or PEMDAS or whatever you want to cite are NOT mathematical entities. They are arbitrary conventions designed for teaching to school children.

I remember something called BODMAS, which might have helped if I remembered how it worked.
-
It would, but I don't believe a real mathematician would ever write something so ambiguously that it required a rote application of BODMAS to sort out. The question is testing that knowledge on an irrelevant example.

My hot-take is this is teaching the student to recognise, categorise, then apply the appropriate tool in order to solve the problem. If you study Engineering at Uni you’ll have 4 years of these daft questions & leave with the cynical belief that everything is a problem :-/
-
Although I'm not sure if that's the intent, this seems a valid way to view it. My problem is that I don't think pupils are understanding that - they think they're applying "the rules of maths". Hence the certainty of responses here: "It's X!" "No, it's Y!"

I'm a software engineer and just once in a while I have to think about how the compiler will order my operations, both arithmetic and logical. Useless for you maybe, but don't assume that it's useless for all.
-
Sure, I can see that. But - I'm curious - is any software designed to use BODMAS as a default? Otherwise, seems to me these are coding skills, not maths ones.

No, it's important to prepare children for their future in answering those bloody memes that come up on Facebook from time to time
