Ten Dems still voted for Thomas while two Rs voted against him. Was a step in the direction of our current climate, but we weren't there yet.

George HW Bush stuck with Clarence Thomas so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

This is possibly (though hardly definitely; see HW Bush and Thomas) true, and having to switch nominees to Amy Coney Barrett would definitely have been a disaster from which the pro-life movement would never have recovered.

The Trump impeachment succeeded in getting a Senate vote from the president's party to convict on an article, something that eluded Republicans in Bill Clinton's Senate trial.

  7. Barone: "I remember interviewing the 29-year-old Biden on the phone in May 1972...That was the start of a long career in electoral politics. It looks like that career might be over this year."

  8. Barone says that SDEs may not be the best number. He notes that initial vote may be more predictive of future primary performance, but that Buttigieg gains from 1st to 2nd vote suggest lower ceiling for Bernie than in 2016

I basically agree with here. "Root for the candidates in both parties who you think would make the best (or least bad) president, because there’s a decent chance one of them will get elected."

  15. Last night Team Warren was spinning it as them fighting for lead with Bernie and Buttigieg & Biden in a “distant forth.” Results we’ve seen have Warren in distant 3rd, closer to Biden than the top two.

  16. Based on results we’ve seen, seems like this is a case where crowd size/energy was a good predictor of actual results.

  17. One thought I keep having — what if this happened in 2008? A murky outcome in Iowa followed by a Clinton win in NH and then...what? Just saying this may have been a history altering screw up and we’ll never know it.
