Something I learned yesterday at a BBQ with friends: the motto of Fall River, Mass. is "We'll Try." Hard to top that.pic.twitter.com/dC02dqaa9J

Newport's is (roughly) "Love conquers all" in Latin.

yes! it's a reference to a massive fire from 1843 that destroyed a bunch of downtown. But no one knows that anymore so it just comes off silly

It's hard to know if that's meant to be optimistic and persevering or just gloomy. The same goes for Providence's 'What cheer?' Though it always looks gloomy on my trash can.pic.twitter.com/F7ht3Hn7rF

That’s basically what I want on my epitaph, (She tried.) so I think it’s pretty great.

It was. In 1995, it was changed to Scholarship City. The "We'll Try" refers to a sign citizens put up the day after the great fire.

I don’t know, it’s hard to beat a rather non-sensical question like “what cheer?”
