I didn't think twitter was the right place to reply to comments on this, so here's a blog post with some additional thoughts:http://philwade.org/post/well,_that_escalated_quickly/ …

s/meetings with developers/meetings/ It's not uniquely a tech problem.
-
Agree with
@StripeyType. Sometimes I feel like us developers are too insular thinking we're doing the important work ... -
And need special allowances. Everyone working on the project are doing important work. Devs can go down the wrong path and need nudging
-
Most people's jobs are important. It's not about being important, it's about how long it takes to get into a productive state.
-
Absolutely! It holds for writers too.
#amwriting -
I guess it holds for every creative work. Getting into the flow just takes time.
-
There was a good graph out of how distractions impacted sysadmins too... Can't find it at the moment.

I’d say that applies to anybody doing thinking/problem solving-type work, not just devs.
-
Did you ...just "all problem solvers matter" him?

Developers are not innocent victims of meetings. The real lesson is to get better at clustering your meetings to leave room for deep work.
-
The problem is when people don't give you a choice and you're just notified that there is a meeting at X. No questions.
-
I decline those. Same for meetings with no agenda, large number of people or unclear topic. Don't waste my time.
-
That said: I get the feeling this is about devs thinking all meetings are bad or they don't need to interact with others to get things done.
-
If you're in a team (and most likely you are), you will need to interact and have discussions with people at some time.
-
Just don't let someone else run your agenda. It's yours, not theirs.
-
No useless meetings in my company yet, too small. Alas the ones we do have are scheduled by others and mandatory
-
But if you're bothered by them/can't get things done, can't it be discussed? (esp. in small company) Seems disrespectful to me?

Sheltered babies. Context switching is hard. Just like everything else.
-
Developers often whine about things not because they are "hard" but because they are offended by the inefficiency
-
Now this argument I can get behind. That's decent perspective
