Black man is shot dead in his garage by white sheriff’s deputy. Jury awards his family $1 for funeral expenses & $1 for harm done each of his three children. But since sheriff’s deputy is deemed only 1% responsible jury award is then reduced to four cents.https://nyti.ms/2LIvzeK

“I think they were trying to insult the case,” Mr. Phillips said of the jury. “Why go there with the $1? That was the hurtful part.” This is awful

It's nominal damages. It happens when a jury finds a defendant responsible but does not believe the defendant's actions caused a monetary loss. It's basically saying, you were wronged, but it's not worth anything. Its a moral victory. In this case, its also bullshit.

The gun was in his back pocket when the victim was found dead. Are we supposed to believe (a) he threatened the cops with a gun in his back pocket or (b) he had the gun out, was shot, and then put the gun in his back pocket while he was dying?
