Michelle Bennett's mother, Carolann, caught COVID-19 in a nursing home in March 2020. Unable to visit her in the hospital, Bennett said goodbye to her mom through FaceTime. The family hasn't held a funeral yet - and Bennett says she won't visit the cemetery until they do

Nursing homes have absorbed many of the pandemic's cruelest blows of death and isolation. A year after the first deaths were reported at a Seattle-area nursing home, I wrote about the victims, the workers and residents, and those left to worry outside.

Feb. 28, 2020 - a year ago today - was the last day Americans could believe the virus might not be as devastating here as it was abroad. Fewer than 100 cases, no deaths. We knew nothing.

I go through submissions from readers whose loved ones died of COVID-19 and have to wade through these messages each time. These types of messages increased substantially after politicians/organizations said the death toll was wrong or exaggerated. 500,000 people are dead.

I was interviewed by for their coverage of the U.S. reaching 500,000 COVID-19 deaths. I'm grateful to their journalists for allowing me to speak about those we've lost, and how reporters are working to make sure they're not forgotten.

Almost exactly a year after the first COVID-19 deaths were reported in Washington state, the U.S. is approaching a terrible milestone: 500,000 have died from the virus. It would take nearly six days - without stopping - to read each COVID-19 victim’s name out loud.
