This. Is. It. We’ve had an unbelievable run: Unforgettable, exhilarating, bloodyminded, yes, and with a heap of grunt & as much purpose as we could muster - farewell friends.
The last dates of the final tour were revealed with Midnight Oil announcing two uniquely intimate extra shows in both Melbourne and Sydney. A portion of proceeds from each of these new gigs will be donated to environmental and Indigenous causes. See http://midnightoil.com
This week's gone by in a blur...

Farewell to the great Archie Roach; a true gentle man, songs deep from the heart, much loved by his people - massive respect across the land.

Deeply worried about universal govt support for Scarborough, Beetaloo & Galilee projects - massive emissions, wrong direction. Read on ‘Swift action will reduce the impact of climate change
No country is immune & it’s utter madness to ramp up fossil fuels, inc Scarborough in WA. Real leadership is needed to avert #ClimateBreakdown. ‘Europe is burning’: How a heatwave engulfed a continent
A noble start to the new govt. 1st, the liberation of the Murugappan family. 2nd, AG Dreyfus dropping the Collaery persecution, a Dutton/Porter security state indulgence. Next, telling US the Aus people want the Assange extradition quietly set aside. Just as US commuted C Manning
Authorities in the Australian state of New South Wales are disproportionately punishing climate protesters, imposing harsh penalties for non-violent protests and bail conditions that violate basic rights.
Just played our last show in DC. This is too real, the stakes sky-high.Democrats must confront now & Oz policy makers pay close attention as 'The US edges closer to civil war' |
honouring promise to get serious on climate. But it’s only the beginning. Extreme weather happening, as predicted, on a staggering scale. Deep emissions cuts & rapid move to renewables with whole of govt response needed now. This is a #ClimateEmergency
Crystal clear. World’s senior diplomat lays it down. For us in Australia, after decades of deceit, all too familiar. ‘Fossil fuel firms ‘have humanity by the throat’, says UN head in blistering attack
More gas, fracking and coal Australian governments? No way. Scientists and informed citizens have been warning of today’s events for decades. Time to urgently elevate this issue; declare & then act on the #ClimateEmergency
A potentially unprecedented heatwave is developing over Europe.
Almost every Western and Central European country could see its highest June temperatures ever recorded.
Temperatures will be 10-20C above average, with temperatures as high as 44C (111F) in Spain and France.
spells out the truth: 'New funding for fossil fuel exploration & production infrastructure is delusional. It will only further feed the scourge of war, pollution and climate catastrophe.' Long overdue for Oz to truly embrace clean energy.
After a decade of gross neglect: with species in decline; abused seas & rivers; no duty of care & a hollowed out dept the environment portfolio is critical. We need a senior minister of the calibre of
Congratulations to Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and ALP on the federal election victory.

More good reasons to vote #ScottMorrison out today:
$Billions lost -subs never built.
Tone deaf to women.
Barnaby Joyce.
Turbo charged rorts, no remorse.
No corruption commission.
No real climate action.
Contempt for arts & culture.
No vision - we’re becoming a hard heart nation.
Yet another good reason to vote #ScottMorrison out - now. ‘Labor to set up independent environmental protection agency and restore ‘trust and confidence’
The odds of at least one of the next 5 years temporarily reaching the #ParisAgreement threshold of 1.5°C have increased to 50:50. In 2015 the chance was zero.
Very likely (93%) that one year from 2022-2026 will be warmest on record: WMO and @metoffice update.

The climate crisis; existential threat/extraordinary opportunity, but if only the politics shifts, now. Got the chance to lay out some thinking in the Gandhi Oration this week. Thanks

This big storm took us out last night in Canberra. Extreme weather, incredibly disappointing for us & fans to hit pause-sorry all. We’ll def return to play nation’s capital at tour’s end, by then a decent govt must be in charge. Ready for tomorrow’s hometown gig, & it’s inside!
The Great Barrier Reef is our most important natural organism: the largest on the planet. It’s a place of great beauty, employing tens of thousands of Australians. It's time to quit coal and gas and protect it properly, for all time.

Media was not told of visits by PM @ScottMorrisonMP to flood-affected farm and SES base until after they had happened. PM's official photographer was there. @7NewsAustralia

Unfortunately we have to cancel tomorrow night's One For The Planet benefit gig. Rob Hirst has been battling a chest infection for several days. He has consistently returned negative covid tests but his symptoms worsened after last night's show at Mt Duneed.
