    Respect to students who come to difficult meetings. I avoided my problems in undergrad until they were too big too avoid; students who come to talk to me at midterm because they're struggling are braver than I was.

    This is a great idea!

    Surprisingly useful first example in calculus: toss a ball in the air. Estimate how high it goes and how long it takes it to return to your hand. How fast is it going, on average? What would you need to estimate how fast it is going when it leaves your hand?

    My heart aches at the news that our student Zeynab and her brother died in the plane crash in Iran. I will always remember Zeynab’s fierce advocacy for STEM and mental health. We have lost such a kind person full of promise and words don’t seem enough.
