Depends on the scale by which you're judging progress...but if you normalize by the amount of compute required, I'd actually say it's far *worse* than ELIZA.

This is VASTLY better than Eliza. It's not exactly a profound intellectual conversation, but it's coherent throughout and stays on-topic. Eliza can't manage to provide coherent line-by-line replies; I just said "Hi!" to her and she replied "What does that suggest to you ?"

I didn't say it was no better...I said it was barely better. It can't even remember California for three seconds.
