Apparently, soldiers rarely use the fully automatic mode that "nonmilitary" rifles lack: https://quora.com/Why-do-militaries-use-assault-rifles-when-the-full-auto-feature-is-rarely-ever-used…. ISTM that there is little or no distinction between AR-15 and military rifle. AR-15 was used extensively by the IRA (I could be missing your point, though).

Answer (1 of 185): I think all answers here, so far, miss out on why automatic is bad. In my training I was taught that the US military made some research during the Vietnam war about a high amount...
