I don't think it's in vendors' economic interest to make robust products. Industry ameliorates problems by making iPad laptops (App store, cloud first, OS monoculture, etc).
mm, I've been pretty happy with my i5-6500 (Skylake) but its hard to know from where any issues originate (Windows, drivers, GPU, CPU, etc), but overall pretty stable as far as Windows PCs go.
