Why not continuously fsync as fast as the drive will let you? There must be a drawback since nobody does this.

it would kill your I/O throughout, I'd think (at least with magnetic media).

fsync timers just seem wrong. A single transaction in the system must wait for the timer to expire.

I read old Tandem papers during work on pg group commit, which are interesting. Robust cost model still difficult.
