Numbers are fascinating, but DBAs are still needed. Cloud vendors are great at keeping your DBMS running, but someone else is needed to keep it running well -- schema design, queries, perf debugging, etc.

ISTM that there is a complicating factor here: DBMSs are more forgiving than ever, to the extent that they appear magical - skewing incentives in organizations. Users are surprised that optimizers aren't perfect yet, whereas I'm still surprised that they appear to be ~adequate.

I think the bigger complicating factor is that tweet above sounds as if there's some degree of consensus about who's responsible for what... but i still see enormous confusion on both the customer and the vendor side about this.

IMO, the related difficulty in this new "shared responsibility" world is trafficking in ambiguity around the exact boundaries. Managed services easily handle backups and storage, but perf challenges or upstream bugs? I think there's a clear, not quite solved, challenge here.
