I committed bottom-up index deletion today, which is slated for Postgres 14. See postgresql.org/docs/devel/btr for a detailed description. In short: it makes index bloat/VACUUM issues much less likely to get out of hand. Updaters are now *required* to clean up indexes after themselves.

I'm flattered. But I should demystify it: it seems like one continual project to me. I had one central good idea (maybe two) that really paid dividends over several years. I think that it could easily have been somebody else if they had been willing to bear the early risk.

I appreciate that, Mehboob. I agree that my weird fascination with continually improving the same "narrow" thing (by trying to find a new way to look at it) must have helped. That part really does seem to come naturally.

You should definitely share more.. these are features that most new users don’t realize took many generations to refine and improve.. history is important for context imho

Peter, understanding the history also helps us relative noobs understand and guide our customers on why they should actually upgrade to newer versions. Without the history outlined, I’m stuck with the argument, “because it’s the cool thing to do” or else digging for hours on end

History is important. I myself don't usually romanticize the past (here or elsewhere). I just happen to find that the historic context makes it way easier to understand, explain, and ultimately improve certain things.
