Postgres Core team is at a potential pivot point in its history.. this might be a good time to expand core, maybe from 5 to 9? It would preserve the 50% rule, preserve the institutional history of the current team members, and add some diversity and new talent into the group..

I agree this would be a good thing. Yet I believe Core deserves a much deeper rethinking. Like: - adhering to the same rules Core states for others (like members to be elected, not life-time members) - turn it into a legal person - prevent multiple positions for the same person

Elected by whom, exactly? We can either make it completely inclusive (i.e. literally anybody can show up and vote), or we can exclude some number of people based on some quasi-arbitrary criteria. This creates a huge burden for people that aren't you.

There are many options (e.g.: open elections, among contributors, among "members" --which is exactly what Core demands of any Postgres NPO--). The only wrong answer, in my opinion, is indefinite term, non elected. That has a name in politics that mostly nobody likes, for reason.

There is definitely upside to proper elections of Leadership. FreeBSD is a perfect example and having leadership that accepts accountability and acts at the same level of their own demands is nothing but a good thing. Are there hurdles ? they are more than worth crossing
