I thought learning all the browser APIs + JS + HTML + CSS was bad...

Most of those keywords are for DDL commands. Application code seldom has to generate or deal with most of them.
I had to CREATE/DROP tables all the time back when I did data analysis, since I had to massage the data locally, & pivot tables in Excel with that much data was painful then.
Fortunately I could use Access to help build the queries.
