Anastasia Lubennikova's Postgres B-Tree deduplication patch is a really impressive piece of work. It makes indexes with lots of duplicates much smaller, which is great, but it may also become an important way of avoiding index bloat in general.

It's not really compression -- there is never any need to decompress. I don't know anything about Oracle's COMPRESS feature, but my guess is that it isn't really comparable.
