If I'm reading that correctly, pluggable storage engines (akin to MySQL) are landing, guessing this is part of paving the way for columnar storage as an option?

It's not scoped at quite the same level as MySQL storage engines, but yes, it is anticipated that the pluggable storage interface will be used for something columnar. There is already a prototype of that, in fact.
