A very good read, thank you! No mention of the shared mem parallelism of PostgreSQL 9.6+ (independent of Wei Hong's par exec work that was removed between POSTGRES 4.2 and the first commit of PostgreSQL). You don't have to choose between inter- and intra-node, you can do both.

—the last contribution may have been my GiST implementation in the
latter half of the 1990s—but even that was rewritten and cleaned up substantially
by open-source volunteers (from Russia, in that case).
I'm on of those russians :) It was very funny, how we discover gist !
