ETHs biggest problem might be that they attracted an army of dishonest academics who are finding out the hard way that it's very difficult to repeat the success of PoW. PoW is an almost "magical" solution to a previously thought unsolved problem. That doesn't happen very often.

ETH "innovations" tend to be along the lines of "We do this _amazing_ thing with magical trustless properties... Please ignore the trusted oracle behind the curtain."

Lawson didn't make tBTC afaik; my impression was his role in this tweet was closer to that of a writer/reporter. The academics I've interacted with usually seem like smart people who probably understand that what they're doing doesn't actually work. At best, motivated delusion.

How does tBTC improve on LBTC using the Liquid network? LBTC includes confidential transactions which is an important privacy feature.

Different type of risk profile is the most honest claim you could make. But for sure CT would be a good feature to have; may be possible to add that to tBTC.

1) custodians are kept in check by having a overcollateralized ETH stake that can be forcibly taken from them 2) here are the future design ideas for price oraclespic.twitter.com/R0BKqBz5Sv

Agree that decentralized price data is still not solved for the time being, but don't think that this will always be true. Checking the ratio of a liquid Uniswap contract for instance (although in this particular case that might lead to some problematic circular dependencies)...
