We have reached a point where it is impossible to vote our way to a substantive democracy. That doesn't mean voting doesn't change anything - it does and electoral campaigns are crucial. But we need to organize people against white minority rule and wealthy elite domination.

It is time for sincere, well-meaning, non-elite liberals, who have long remained broadly within the norms of American society, to realize that raw power lies in the hands of those who organize, take and hold it. Where ballots have power it is only because of long struggles.
