When asked how to do futurism, say "be FOCAL":
- Facts (crucial starting point)
- Observations (add value to facts)
- Consequences (observations plus math)
- Actions ("So what can/should we do?")
- Long View (scenarios of plausible game change)

PS - I used to spell out the "L" in FOCAL as "Long-range considerations," but we all know that "Long View" (and for that matter, "scenarios") are the canonical terms courtesy of : I steal from the best.
