Felt like sharing this die shot I took of an Intel 82385 cache controller.

Kaby Lake seems pretty forgiving when it comes to power sequencing :)

Messing around with some old school tech, wonder what secrets this Pentium II holds...

Slightly late, but here's the slides to my talk: . Contains some useful bonus slides and links, somewhere in the next few days I will add more references to prior work on this subject.

I don't usually post about politics, but I noticed something weird during the vote yesterday: for about a minute there seemed to be a republican YEA for article I but then it disappeared again, is this normal for house votes?

Dutch Minister Grapperhaus has to stop urging for encryption backdoors (today's article). This is at least his 2nd time violating official Dutch Government position that strong encryption is essential for society. Urgent Questions by below.

Finally able to boot the host without running the emulator or resuming bup. Wrote a python script that pokes the right register bits using OpenIPC with a lot of magic numbers everywhere. It consistently resets twice before working after powercycle but it does eventually boot.

I traced all MMIO and IOSF accesses the emulator sent to the hardware, and am sorting through them. This is easier than looking at the fw because powering up the CPU with an incorrect state of the PCH regs seems to crash it immediately, making testing from scratch difficult.

Leftmost machine is my laptop, the DUT. The machine to the right of it is a hackerspace laptop, showing the OpenIPC debugger interface on its screen, on the external screen is the emulator running the firmware.

Its pretty annoying how sparse the public PSF control register documentation is. Reverse engineering doesn't help much either as Intel's firmware also just shoves constants into it, but because these control what "PCI" devices the PCH exposes it would be nice to understand them.

Working on figuring out how to boot the host CPU without running/emulating the original ME firmware. Should really get a dedicated test machine instead of reflashing my main laptop and booting a hackerspace laptop off it's SSD...

Hmm, seems like you can write to host-visible DRAM as well. Interesting!

Managed to boot my laptop using an emulated ME "bup" module, by passing through the ICC and PMC devices to real hardware over the debug probe!
