Just out from et al. The structure of rewards (and costs) in pharmaceutical drug development. We introduce the 'reward box' interactive graphic to see how the elements interplay, how specific policies affect it.

According to the CDC, opioid overdoses kill on average 130 Americans each day. tells us why drug companies are having a hard time finding a reason to do something about it.

1/2 I just ran into Mike Pence at the Drake Diner in Des Moines. I confronted him about his damaging health care cuts because for me it's not about politics, it's about saving lives.

Thank you for speaking with me about how incentives and rewards available for finding rare disease treatments may be re-directing efforts away from important public health problems.

Selling a few items at a high price sounds like the business model for a car dealership, but more and more drug companies are working this way. explains why, and who gets left behind.

It was really a pleasure. One of the hardest truths in public policy is that resources of all types are finite. Not just $'s, but talent, and energy, and focus, and recognition. Pursuing rare disease treatments robs from our ability to tackle public health challenges around us.

Amazing exchange, in which guy at diner — a local doctor, as it turns out — calmly and firmly presses Pence to explain/defend new Trump Medicaid initiative. Spoiler alert: He can’t.

I like data. I think having data is vital to addressing social problems. But a graph of maternal deaths that circulated on Twitter this week shows the limits of trusting numbers too much. Precision creates an illusion of accuracy and that can be dangerous. 1/12

Excited to share new work : Drug prices are a major concern for Americans. We describe the many levers policymakers have—beyond price negotiation—to reduce the cost burden on patients, while maintaining incentives for the innovation society needs.

Jared Kushner, senior adviser to the President, says the White House's Middle East plan is "a great deal" and if Palestinians reject it, “they’re going to screw up another opportunity, like they’ve screwed up every other opportunity that they’ve ever had in their existence.”

Graphic labeled the 'Reward Box' to enable the double entendre sub-header in the title. But also, we want policymakers to in fact 'think inside the box'. The market is a policy construct, it is not 'free'. The industry sees it all of a piece, policy makers should too.
