It still should be at least 100. The wrapping you have to do to make it fit is more distracting.

This may sound controversial, but I always find that if breaking the lines to fit 72 or 80 cpl makes it less readable, then there's something wrong with the code or with the formatting rules. Too much nesting, not enough function extraction etc.

72 characters for old, as in punch card old, Fortran programmers :) Some of us are still kicking
-
Oh, by all means. I'm all for less than 80. I'm suspicious of a lack of reflection when someone suggests more, especially more than 100.

It's not just easier to read and list, it also helps while debugging, you can use smaller windows . Like Kevlin Henney says, the important bits should be on the left. Longer lines make it harder to quickly understand what's going on.

Every statement in code that exceeds $characterlimit needs to be refactored. But who the hell is printing out code!? In a newspaper!? I‘m outside planting some trees :D
-
This has nothing to do with physical print-outs: this is to do with the physical limits of how human vision works.

It’s arbitrary. Once we had 132 column printers in the mid ‘70s it was already an out-of-date concept.
