As a follow up, it turns out the impersonation scam Grubhub perpetrated on Michelin-starred restaurant Kin Khao involved a “ghost kitchen” that is just as sketchy as feared:

Oh goody. The Democrats can’t figure out their own caucus voting, but I’m sure our digital voting machines with their gaping security flaws will be totes ok for a national election in which a foreign power is actively trying to influence the outcome.

TL;DR - remote can work but it takes dedication and extra effort. There’s still no substitute for the creative magic that comes from workplace serendipity.

It may be contrarian these days, but I’m still of the opinion that a co-located team can run circles around a remote team (if controlling for quality). But talent sourcing challenges & employee prefs are real, so remote should be an option. It just requires effort to do well.

I think there’s a lot of value in giving employees flexibility and not implementing draconian ass-in-chair policies. Marisa Mayer’s infamously killed the remote work policy at Yahoo and that went over like a lead balloon.

Quotes from Steve Jobs and Google’s head of workplace environs, David Radcliffe, talking about how you can’t schedule innovation & the magic of spontaneous interactions. But I guess in 2020 Slack & Zoom are supposed to magically solve this?

In 2013-2015 there were a series of articles talking about how despite everyone being super internet-connected, there’s no substitute for in-person serendipity for creative work. And now the narrative is unless you’re all-in on remote work you’ll never hire quality talent.

Interesting how in just ~5-7 years the tech world has gone from breathlessly worshipping Steve Jobs’ office designs for maximizing workplace serendipity to going all-in on remote everything

Directly related, this mind-blowing thread from a local SF thai restaurant that was impersonated by GrubHub, essentially defrauding customers.

I do not understand how Grubhub (owns Seamless, Eat24 & MenuPages) hasn't been sued into oblivion via class action for this kind of outrageous impersonation. IANAL, but copyright infringement & false advertising seem the least bad things here.

Well said, . Regulation is a significant burden for all companies, but disproportionately for SMB & mid-market companies. That’s why we’ve built specialized infrastructure to let companies focus on their core business while outsourcing compliance overhead.
