Most of my game design over the last several years has gone into making games for UFO 50. I encourage you to give it a look no matter what kinds of games you like -- the scope of genres is BROAD, from arcade action to story-driven adventure to weird thinky strategy titles.

Typed up 3 of these variants and posted details on BGG:

I created a mashup of Tussie Mussie and Hanamikoji. You need a copy of Tussie Mussie to play:. Rules posted here:

I like Tussie Mussie okay but I wanted a meatier 2 player experience so I've started modifying it with some rules borrowed from Hanamikoji and so far I'm liking the results! Got about 3 variants kicking around -- still trying to figure out which one I think is best.

The feeling I'm always chasing is being on the edge of my seat, knowing that specifically either A or B could happen, and being genuinely unsure of which one it will be. Yes, there are other more nuanced feelings that games/stories can generate but this is the one I most crave.

For my taste, there's much overlap between good stories and games: (a) Characters (players) making tough decisions. (b) Clearly understood stakes. (c) Uncertain outcomes that exist within a known set of possibilities. (d) Consistent world building and character traits (rules).

A fun thing about working on UFO 50 is getting to work in lots of different games genres I wouldn't normally take a stab at. Currently finishing up a sports game.

The rights to Time Barons have reverted back to Derek and I. No plans to do anything specific with them at the moment (my main priority right now is finishing UFO 50!) and plenty of copies are still available, but it feels good to have control again.

Many of the games I've worked on recently for UFO 50 have had like 3-4 different play modes... "50" might be technically a bit of an undercount, haha

Saw The Lighthouse and behind us was an elderly couple that clearly didn't do their research because they became increasingly upset, and she got mad at him for bringing her to it, and finally they walked out, but only 5m before the ending. I mean, if you've made it that far...

Definitely works like this exist -- but I also see a lot of sci-fi, horror, etc, (esp. in the world of movies and TV) that either fails to be consistent about its rules or is just uninterested in elucidating them -- except when necessary to shoehorn plot outcomes.

A good ending in such a work should feel like a logical result of the rules as established -- but hopefully a surprising one that the audience didn't anticipate.

For me, the key element is that the rules themselves must be very consistent and also clearly explained to the audience. Clear understanding of the rules allows the audience to guess at what the implications of the rules are, similar to the way you might work out a mystery story

At the crossroads of my interests in games and storytelling lies a genre of stories I wish I saw more of -- call it systemic fiction, maybe? It's basically a sub-type of speculative fiction (horror, sci-fi, fantasy, etc) that is strongly committed to exploring a fictional ruleset

Finally got to play Deus the other day, after wanting to play it for years, and I really want to play it again. I'm not a huge fan of dry eurogames in general, but there's a select few games that I really love, and Deus may be joining that group, alongside the likes of Concordia.

To my ongoing surprise and delight, Air Land & Sea continues to get positive press. Thanks to for speaking so kindly about the game on the latest Dice Tower podcast:

"Each player controls a two-mile-tall, immortal, invulnerable frog-like creature that exists solely to gather terrain from the Shards of Aeth, the fragments of a long-ago shattered world." That's the premise of Cosmic Frog from : . —WEM
