Definitely partially reframed my understanding of how candidates move into different political roles. Thanks.

We Republicans are trying our best to vote for those who make a difference.
@JohnJamesMI is an excellent candidate and I look forward to his leadership! https://johnjamesforsenate.com/Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo

Depends on what Perry’s drawing from I guess. Tim Scott a) was originally appointed to Senator (and then won special re-election) and b) declined to join the Congressional Black Caucus

The problem with this article is: it's the same for Whites and Blacks. Americans like to vote for politicians whose views on race and identity issues aren't too left-wing. That's the reason, Hillary lost and Obama won. You feel offended by what I wrote? Your problem.

This is one of the ways gerrymandering hurts Democrats, since almost all black members of congress represent majority-minority districts it's tough to make the transition to statewide office because the politics are so different.

Very interesting piece! Thinking now about black House Dems who've run for Senate: FL: Kendrick Meek GA: Denise Majette MD: Donna Edwards (lost primary) MD: Kweisi Mfume (lost primary) MS: Mike Espy TN: Harold Ford Missing anyone?

Republican Tim Scott did it successfully. But before that, according to this 2012 journal article, only 4 black congress members ran for senate. Not sure if that covers former congress members. https://www.jstor.org/stable/23187107?seq=1#page_scan_tab_contents …pic.twitter.com/E0yJkRarCZ
