Is it fair to say that being a Nazi is a very bad thing, and that progressives ought not to throw that accusation around lightly? Whilst putting “hero” in scare quotes? I will attack any traitor whether or not they wore the uniform, but let’s be absolutely sure before denouncing.

It is not exclusively a Nazi symbol but it codes heavily with modern neo-Nazi and neo-fascist movements, which are of substantially greater importance to the discussion than the symbology of the Third Reich.
