i haven’t seen it so i could be very wrong but it feels kinda transphobic and gross to have a man traditionally play miss trunchbull in the matilda musical
i get she’s got to be physically ~a certain way~ and maybe i should just blame the author for it but the whole “masculine traits in a woman is ugly and villainous” thing maybe shouldn’t include drag

idk i can just imagine terfs looking at a manly baritone playing this gender-nonconforming abuser and going “yep that’s exactly what trans women are”

i just think if a character is already demonized for being gender nonconforming in the source material maybe don’t double down and make her be played by a man. esp when miss honey is contrasted to be wholesomely and “correctly” femme and gentle

but maybe i’m biased cause i saw myself in miss trunchbull, being a masc-leaning queer child and never appreciated the story’s (or delightful movie’s) subtle sexism (like matilda “summoning” a “real man”, miss honey’s dead father, to put agatha in her place)

anyway the musical looks fun i just wish so many of the stories we hold onto and adapt weren’t so filled with unhelpful mindsets and prejudices, because it will only perpetuate those sexist and queerphobic views for future generations
