Problems of spam and harassment are much more tractable if someone is in charge; it’s easier to build good UI if messages are more uniform in length and structure; easier to do ID if you have some idea of participants’ goals.

Being able to observe behavior across an entire network and create affordances or constraints to shape that behavior is a huge thing to give up in a distributed or decentralized net.

To partly answer my own question, I think Facebook only started getting serious about qualitative research in the last five years. I don’t know how much voice they have on non-safety issues.
