Boy it's hard to get people to take conceptual corrections at the point of a code review.

Agreed. When code has been written and is working is too late to discuss conceptual approach. Do you use RFC diffs/pull requests?

I've found that teams can benefit from habitually putting up very early, request-for-comment diffs, maybe even just comments/pseudo-code.

Yeah like a quick and dirty full feature. If you break it into mergable chunks too early, its hard to conceptualize.

Yes, I finally recommended an MVP to expose as much of the design approach as possible for minimum code writing, and iterating from there.
