How do you manage versions and deployment queries for continuous deployment? I take it “latest commit number” is wrong

Not sure I understand your situation, but in my world prod should always be the latest commit on some–usually the default–branch.

agree, trying to get there. how does the deployment system know what the latest commit is? assuming it has a list/db of all published builds

CI is responsible for building. It consumes your VCS directly. It should always deploy the latest successful build for particular branch.

Well, this is Continuous Deployment, not CI. It is not concerned with version numbers.

I've always used systems that did both.
