The @netflix Android app asks you up front if you would like push notifications on first login. I wish more apps were so well-behaved!

apps with no obvious use for push notifications, asking in a context that doesn't warrant it, I assume want to spam me

Yes! Netflix wants to spam me. But all my other apps don't even bother asking so I consider the yes/no question up front a huge win

does Android grant push notifications by default?

Yes, it's my biggest complaint about the system. All other permissions have to be approved as needed, very nice. But not notifs.

I'm pretty curious how that decision got made.

Android had an opt-in-to-all-on-install permissions system at first but then switched to the far superior opt-in-on-first-use.
