Thanks, all. I'd almost be happy with JSON, but I wanted something strongly normalizing that I can use for the long haul in case I want to verify the signature of a stored message. I can always store the JSON verbatim.
Is there anything I should know about Protocol Buffers before investing in it?

I can tell you that implementing them at my company is probably the biggest engineering regret of my CTO and manager.

That article is weird. I have never seen anyone use maps, and oneofs can be repeated with nested messages, but usually oneofs are not that common anyway.
