being pulled away from your code in the middle of a complicated refactor is almost physically painful. you've spent all this time moving half of your brain into the computer & suddenly all the connections are severed, you've been split in two

I know what you mean—but I would caution against refactoring this way. It’s rarely necessary, and it’s error-prone compared to incrementally adding tests and incrementally making changes. But the worst part: I’ve had to throw away days of work when it didn’t work out.
