Why don't web browsers automatically update your bookmarks when they come across an HTTP 301 redirect?
My guess is that most people don’t use bookmarks, so they haven’t been a strategic focus for browser makers.

How do most people manage pages they want to come back to, I wonder? Do they just keep piles of open tabs and rely on address bar autocomplete?

Yes, in general.

I don’t get this. I have about 12k bookmarks, and add about 200 every few weeks. Browser facilities for it are crap though, so i wrote my own python scripts to manage, clean and update them.
