This isn't a novel realization, but be should center this flip-flop (or spiral, if you're optimistic). Even human-centered design, which I studied, is uncomfortable with how hard it is, how long it takes, to get any kind of clarity about what should be done.

So many of the things we do as an industry, we just don't know how to think about them, much less critique them, until they're a done deal. I'm not even sure slowing down helps that much, though extreme profit incentives definitely don't.
