Please, welcome Kunpengopterus antipollicatus! A new pterosaur from the Jurassic of China with a reversed, or opposed, thumb. This is the first such case for a pterosaur. This kind of feature typically correlates to arboreal habits. [1/5]pic.twitter.com/ypw03J7Hsy
Our ecomorphological analysis suggests that Kunpengopterus was an arboreal specialist, while Wukongopterus and Darwinopterus were scansorial. We infer that these close relatives probably shared their habitat (the Tiaojishan paleoforest) through niche partitioning. [2/5]pic.twitter.com/uagpRMZKGf

We also attribute specimen ZMNH M8802, the famous female specimen gravid with two eggs, to the new species Kunpengopterus antipollicatus. Previous workers had regarded it as either an indeterminate species of Kunpengopterus, or Darwinopterus. [5/5]pic.twitter.com/nM88G8KMvz
