would love to hear a theory
see second chart
It is good news. The way CPS works, labor force reentrants who considered themselves unemployed while out of labor force could go from OLF to long-term unemployed.
That's what I figured, though Erica I thought the CPS tried to steer respondents away from answering that way if they were classified as NILF before?
Field staff do try to help respondents be consistent, but a CPS analyst at BLS mentioned this as a known pattern in the data.
Makes sense. Still interesting that with all the inflows from OLF we've had in recent years, we'd suddenly get a surge in LTU this month.
Sampling error can make trends seem lumpier than they really are.
Thank you!

Is it simply more people actively looking for work?
any idea why why unemployed + 499K but when you sum changes by length of unemployment (less than 5w +193k, 5-14w -63K, 15-26w -141K, longer 289K) they total +278K not +499K. need more coffee.
Yeah, G and I are speculating about what's up with that.
Thought: retirees / early retirees in manu sector found their old job is needed to be filled again so why not work for 1/2 years for some extra cash.
*driving though so don’t know if data supports
