Does baptism not exist in Lyra’s world in HIS DARK MATERIALS? It seems the Magisterium is hoping intercision will play a similar theological role in removing original sin. Given they’re performing intercision on children, infant baptism doesn’t exist?

The name obviously calls to mind circumcision, which seems to be the in-universe comparison here. Yet circumcision doesn’t have to do with the remission of sins, so the *theological* comparison is actually baptism.

Then again, there’s an explicit connection made between Dust/original sin and what the Magisterium has deemed “bad” sexuality, so intercision and circumcision both being used in an attempt to control sexuality tracks. Just not...theologically?

Circumcision became common in America because folks decided it would curb masturbation. That was an attempt to control sexuality. But I’m unaware of any *sexuality-related* theological justification for circumcision.

its associated with lust and pleasures of the flesh which are a sin. "God" commanded its removal precisely because it removes earthly pleasure. Disgusting practice.

Do you have a biblical verse for that? Circumcision is a mark of the Abrahamic covenant in the Bible, not a procedure to remove “earthly pleasure.” (Also, my original tweet was part of a thread about the series HIS DARK MATERIALS and its fictional intercision procedure.)
