For an organisation that exists to protect children, it’s remarkable that the NSPCC unquestionably accepts religion as a justification for the unnecessary and harmful cutting of infants genitals. Religious privilege in action. https://www.secularism.org.uk/opinion/2018/03/religious-freedom-isnt-a-license-to-violate-others-rights1 …https://twitter.com/NSPCC/status/1100414188403384320 …

Is this really the hill you want to die on, Stephen? In the midst of an explosion of antisemitism across Europe? Really?

It absolutely is not. If you (ludicrously) link FGM to male circumcision - a practice associated almost exclusively in childhood with Orthodox Jews, then surely you have to accept the critique that's going to come your way?

It’s not a practice associated almost exclusively with Orthodox Jews. I’m standing on an important and consistent point of principle and I don’t think you know enough about this. I’d rather not engage with you further on this after that comment.

Umm, ok. I'm pretty sure I know enough about the protection of religious liberty and parental rights, but there we go.

Andy, this comment suggest you are looking at only one side of the equation. Those are important and so are the rights of individuals to be free from medically unnecessary genital modifications.

I'm not especially interested in getting into a debate here tbh. It is quite literally mad, not to mention disingenuous, to compare FGM to male circumcision. You cannot ride roughshod over the liberty of Jewish parents to carry out their religious ritual even if you don't like it

Belief that there's no comparison is misinformed. See works on topic from
@briandavidearp. Religious liberty is important and also individuals have bodily autonomy rights. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sQQTIpBWqvY …#i21 reply 1 retweet 27 likes -
What next? Policing exactly what food a child is given by their parents? Disallowing ear piercing? What about braces to alter teeth? Bodily autonomy is not absolute from birth. Children have to rely on their parents for care, therefore parents make decisions over their bodies.
