Happy to have a livestream discussion on this with you and @chaplainbryant - you are mixing religion and culture with what you can be biased against. Muslims have our own issues like islamists to deal with - but demonizing is as a whole solves nothing @ShireenQudosi

Let’s start with point one. Please reference when in the Quran FGM is sanctioned. If it’s not in the Quran, it’s off the table as “Islamic.”

Mohammed spoke about it very positively several times, as quoted in the Hadith.

It’s wali (a cultural) practice that’s also prevalent in Christian Africa and as
@ShireenQudosi said - document it or take the issue off the table.3 replies 0 retweets 0 likes -

Culture certainly plays into it, but as long as religious authorities endorse it I would consider it part of the sects that these authorities speak for. One out of four Sunni schools of jurisprudence calls it mandatory, the other three recommend it.

I fully support reform attempts that seek to axe the Hadiths from being considered as scripture, and focus on the more peaceful Mecca period of the Quran, but Islam as practiced today by most isn't like that. Hopefully one day it will be.

As i see it, FGM is a cultural practice of the region that predates Islam, but which snuck its way into its jurisprudence through some ambiguous scripture. Ending the practice requires dismantling that jurisprudence, and thus also affects the religion.

It came through as cultural practices for some Shi’a and a handful of African folks - also FYI my father was a Hanafi sheikh - it’s neither mandated nor prescribed in the madhabs.

As i read it, the Hanafi view on it is that it is "makrama" ("noble", i.e. recommended), and as such changing religious teachings on the matter does play a role in getting the practice abolished. The Shafi'i even consider it mandatory.

There’s a big difference between male circumcision (which both Muslim madhabs and Jews condone) and FGM - which most of us abhor. Also cite what madhab ruining you’re referring to re: FGM

@ShireenQudosi and I are on an anti-FGM Council and have worked to educate against it.1 reply 0 retweets 0 likes - 2 more replies
