Autumns and winters are warming steadily but recent springs have been a junk-show. Could more slush/chill since 2013 from the Dakotas to Wisconsin be a reaction to rapid arctic warming? Apparently what happens in the arctic doesn't stay in the arctic...

February through May are running colder, especially April. It's a relatively new phenomenon for us in Minnesota (about a decade). But @pdouglasweather and two top state climatologists dig into the data: What happened to our spring weather? bit.ly/3Nvygm7

St. Cloud broke the record for the most snowfall recorded in a season this winter with 88.2" as of yesterday. This is over 40" higher than the normal snowfall for the season, and breaks the previous record of 87.9" which was set during the winter of 1964-1965. #mnwx

Skies should clear this evening - definitely worth a look before turning in for the night.

The Northern Lights look to make a potential return to the area tonight! Skies will be mostly clear, providing excellent viewing conditions. The best time to see the Northern Lights will be this evening and night.

El Niño or even a Super El Niño brewing in the equatorial Pacific. Strong correlation with milder winters so good chance upcoming winter will bring more rain/ice. Last 8 years have been warmest on record worldwide but with El Niño cooking away good chance 2024 will be warmest yet

Replying to @pdouglasweather
But when will it end? 😭😭😭

Coming out of a La Niña phase in the Pacific which correlates with colder winters (natural variation). Falls and winters are trending warmer, but springs are increasingly fickle over the Upper Midwest. Arctic Amplification may be displacing colder air southward later in winter 😬

@pdouglasweather can you help explain this cold weather snap? (Not asking to be a smart ass, rather, to learn about the jet stream or air pattern that isn’t happy with us at the moment.)

Thanks to Steve Cochran for having me on to talk about stewardship and solutions. Most days I’m optimistic we’ll clean up our messes, avoid a worst case warming scenario, and lower emissions over time. Our kids and grandkids are counting on us…

Meanwhile in Bayfield, the all-time seasonal snowfall record was broken before the calendar even hit April! Since March 18 they have just been gaining a larger and larger lead, now at 182.0"! That's equivalent to 15.2 feet! #wiwx

I had a big fan girl moment this morning. Met @pdouglasweather in line at the social security office. I introduced myself to him and his wife. We had a lovely conversation and even cheered each other on they got closer to our numbers. Of course I called my mom after and gushed.

Like flipping a switch: huge pattern shift coming. 60s by this weekend. A few 70s increasingly likely by mid-April? Excited for spring, but apprehensive about what this means for people living along rivers and streams
